Atlast we have some concrete picture of the super Netbook from Sony. The Vaio Pocket or Vaio P whtever it is called. The picture is taken from a display screen and not hands-on, but we are hoping for more soon! The FCC previously leaked the dimensions at 9.5 x 4.5-inches and the other specs might well be as seen in the image before. Also clearly visible is a webcam (Motion Eye) next to the display. This one is surely power packed.

The highly promoted LG touchscreen has hit the markets with an aggressive pricing. The Cookie (KP 500) for me is an update to the previous attempt to cash in on the Touch hype - “Prada”. While the LG Prada was an early attempt, the Cookie is much more impressive.
The touchscreen is not as bright and rich as the iPhone but comparing the KP500 to the Apple iPhone would be wrong. Firstly the iPhone is iPhone and secondly the KP500 is targeted at a different level altogether. While the iPhone would cost you anywhere around Rs 28000 - Rs 30000 (8GB) in India the KP500 is all yours for Rs 13000/- approx!

Motorola has announced the A3100 which is believed to be the official replacement for the not so great A1200 (or the other Mings). This time powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 instead of Linux OS. The futuristic A3100 seems to draw its looks from the AURA (or just that their design team needs a originality refresh).

CES is around and I have a feeling that I am gonna dump both the E61i and the iPhone that I currently use. Here is a mock up of what the new Palm devices running Nova would look like. A iPhone like big touchscreen with a slide out QWERTY. AWESOME!

Rumor mills are running at full speed with Macworld and CES both coming up this week. And the latest one for Apple after the iPhone Nano, 64GB iPod Touch, Red iPhone and 32GB iPhone its the Macbooks. It is expected that Apple is preparing to release a 17″ Unibody Macbook (read more about Unibody) with a super new inbuilt battery that would give much more backup. We say lets wait and watch…

HP Mini MI (Mobile Internet edition) 1000 is expected to be unveiled at CES 2009 in just a couple of days. While the exact config is not clear this one is real cheap starting at $379.99 and is expected to run Linux OS. The image above also shows a XP edition of the same. While the earlier Netbook from HP Mini Note wasn’t a real competition for the EEE and the others this one seems to be something concrete.

The much awaited (atleast for me) Nokia E63 (scaled down version of E71) is now available in India. Retailing for less than Rs 15000 this seems to be a good buy. But compared to the expectations of USD 250, I feel the pricing is still a little steep. Courtesy Fine Connections, we managed to have a quick look at the handset and It is pretty impressive. Though a little bigger than the E71, it would be good upgrade from an E61i.
Also confirmed that the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic shall hit the Indian stores by this weekend. The pricing is Approx Rs 19400 which is really impressive. The first batch of Nokia’s in 2009 is looking good. The 5800 faces competition from LG Cookie which is aggressively priced @ Rs 13000 and highly promoted in India. The LG Cookie went on sale last week.

Sony Ericsson C510 (also referred as KATE) is expected to release in Feb. This extremely good looking and sleek 3.2MP phone is believed to be the successor of K770. Featuring an accelerometer (yes seen before in K850i), and 160MB of inbuilt memory - I wouldn’t mind trading my k810i for this (Just that the buttons look a little difficult to operate; I guess they won’t be very comfortable, anyone with comments on that?).

We have seen the best feedback someone can leave for an eBay seller. Here is another nice one from eBay India. Apparently an eBay buyer complains on the community boards that he received a battery ordered from eBay India wrapped in toilet paper and used cigrette case. Moreover the Battery didn’t work with his cellphone. Enough for the buyer to leave a -ve feedback for the seller and write the matter on the community boards.

Things we didn’t get in 2008, things we always wanted and what we can expect / ask from 2009!
1. Orkut grow up. Till when will you run in Beta? Same for Gmail, stop calling it beta now.
2. Sony Ericsson - Will Sony ever open up and go universal? A step forward and then a step back. Why doesnt the C902 and C905 accept MicroSD cards like the K850i? See 10 things that Sony Screwed Up
3. Palm: Hope Nova lives up to our expectations. Ready to dump Nokia anyday for a good Palm
4. Apple: Will you award us a iPhone - Unlocked (at a affordable price) ? Tired of all the Jailbreaking & Unlocking along with the cat and mouse game with firmwares. Give away a good iPhone all open (maybb Nano). Or a completely reworked one with Flash, Better camera and a laser gun
5. Nokia - Would you please relaunch the Nokia 8850? Please Please Please {Update: OK, I got a hate mail from Shaun on this; He still curses me for gifting my 8850 in college to someone

2008 has been a fantastic year for OnlyGizmos and personally for our team members. With all the time we spent together running around for coverage and at the same time managing our slim finances; we seem to have grown several years older
Here are some of our best moments of 2008, thank you for all the love and support:

- The year started on a high with excellent coverage of the IIT TechFest. Jimmy Wales interview and more.
- The OG 1st Anniv in May was memorable and we had 1/3 of a million hits till then
- Our Editor Annkur P Agarwal was invited to write the Cover Story on Gadgets for One India One People, something that makes us feel really special
- Around the same time we also Partnered IIIT Hyderabad RoboCamp
- After hitting several technical issues and a dull phase we managed to shift to WordPress towards the end of the year. Thanks to Asif (Cubex Systems, Pakistan) and OGz Mohit for all the technical support.
- The year had began with another small venture iPhone Help; that was the brain child of our own Piyansh Mantry and Tassavur Shaikh. While OG hit a rough patch IPHelp worked and we are proud that it has made a name for itself. From being a part of OG to being the strongest link of the OG Network
- Another cheer towards the year end was the MPSTME Taqneeq 08, where we were again the official Online Media Partners. We had a wonderful outing, reminded us of the IIT TechFest

Earlier this year Cuil (pronounced ‘Cool’) was believed to be a Google killer. A new search engine started by some industry veterans and well funded. I was personally amazed to see the amount of PR and buzz it managed to create early on. Though the day it launched we were disappointed (it didn’t index us), the quality was not upto the mark. And eventually, few months down the line it seems to have hit a dead end with no real traffic.
So what really caused this crash? Is Cuil really that bad? Maybe not

January 09 is going to be all technology. CES, Macworld, IITB TechFest and the Nokia developers conference in Bangalore. This is certainly a event that developers wont like to miss. Internationally we have seen the kind of buzz developers make. India is one of the fastest growing mobile market and the opportunities for developers is endless.
It is believed that the mobile VAS market would touch 15000crores in 2010. Thats more than double in 2 years. Mobile Gaming and Advertising are expected to fuel the growth in this sector.

I came across an interesting post on GigaOm highlighting Google’s influence on new age server designs. The Google architecture is one of the key reasons for the search engines success. Their custom server desings and software make things several times cheaper and effecient than the competition.
The note highlights that server makers like Rackable Systems are inspired by the Google approach and are making similar efforts.
the emergence of these Google-inspired servers, which include features such as heat-tolerant processors to save on cooling costs, a focus on motherboards containing 12v-only power supplies for servers, putting two servers on one board and stripping out unnecessary parts. [GigaOm]

Thank god this one is not another iPhone competing Touch device. Afterall someone decided to leave alone Apple and go after Nokia. The Samsung INNOV8 aka i8510 is said to be a Nokia N96 killer. Powered with a 8MP camera, slideout Keypad, 2.8″ Screen, GPS, 16gig internal memory, WiFi, Powered by Symbian S60 and more; WOW! This one surely gives Nokia a run for its money.

I remember using a cheap wrist watch with calculator sometime in school (maybe 10yrs back); but then the whole world on wrist concept is some illusion that people are yet to get over. We are yet to see a good successful wrist phone and the ones that I personally saw were disastrous (Anyone remembers that Reliance Mobile?).
Here is another added to the list, The LG GD910 - Just another gadget we would see at CES 09.

Vaio Pseries or Pocket Vaio whtever it would be officially called; Sony’s official netbook is all set to be revealed at CES (Jan 09). Dozens of leaked images and rumored specs are out there and no one is sure what would it really be. But as the name suggests It might well be ultra small to fit in a pocket, but with Sony my only hope is its not ultra expensively priced aswell.
While the whole concept of netbook is portability with affordability, Sony is know to miss out on the later. Pioneered by the Asus EEE the netbook revolution, we would need to wait and watch if it can spice up the competition in the netbook market!
Update: Another noteworthy product launch in pipeline is the MacBook Air competitor from DELL ‘Adamo’. Though no specific details are out, it is believed that it would be a Killer (Lighter and cheaper than the AIR)!
