2 Hidden ways to get more from your Gmail

Now who hasn’t faced spam? It’s become a part of our lives dealing with Spam amongst genuine mails. Over the past few years I have heard various ideas as to how to deal with spam. Some suggested having multiple ids, say one for office one for personal use. Others suggest me to keep a separate id to giveaway to banks and other registrations over the internet.

However with increasing number of online registrations and user accounts, say for me I have 2x Netbanking, 1x Facebook, 1x ISP Home, 1x ISP Office, 1x Digg, 1x StumbleUpon, 1x Cellular service, 1x eBay … the list is endless! So however my problem is that I now have over 18 email ids and it’s a mess practicing this method.

So how about a single email id that lets you change itself every time you give it to someone? Oh yes its here in your very own Gmail!

Gmail has 2 unique (and hidden) features that lets you deal with this situation.

  • Put any amount of dots (.) / ‘full stops’ between your email id, the mail will still get forwarded to the same account! For example: johnnycry@gmail.com is the same as johnny.cry@gmail.com / j.o.h.n.n.ycry@gmail.com or johnnycr.y@gmail.com.
  • Add any suffix to your user id using a plus sign (+), and the mail will still land at the same email id. For example: johnnycry@gmail.com is the same as johnnycry+xyz@gmail.com / johnnycry+bank@gmail.com or johnnycry+isp@gmail.com

Now that’s really cool, isn’t it? But how do I use it? Well as we mentioned above it’s a smart idea to give a different email id while registering on any website or a formality registration with your ISP or Cellular service provider. So if you feel there might be some really important mails coming from your Bank you can give them your id as johnnycry+bank@gmail.com and create a filter in Gmail to Star any message coming to this id. On the other hand you can also use this when you register for a service and think they might share your information. Later if you start to receive too much Spam on a particular combination, a Filter to skip/delete any message coming to that id can be created!

And if you really cracked your brains thinking, if we can use both these variants together? as in johnnycry@gmail.com = johnny.cry+both@gmail.com, well actually you can! Cheers!

Update: Another query just clicked me, What if I already registered on Gmail with a dot (.) between two words. Eg: Johnny.cry@gmail.com ? Well Johnnycry@gmail.com also belongs to you, so it won’t matter where you put that dot (.)!!

Update2: OG user Sandeep just tipped me with the info that jhonnycry@googlemail.com is the same as johnnycry@gmail.com !!

That all these variations of a gmail address are perfectly equivalent, is (now) not a secret. Which means, hello!, that spammers and legitimate merchants and sites can now just cross-ref or merge the variants too. So a merchant who receives a seemingly unique address of johndoe+bongshopdotcom@gmail.com, or j.o.h.n.doe@googlemail.com, can just parse or merge these to distill 'em into johndoe@gmail.com. The seeming joy expressed here, in "a-ha, now we've beat 'em!" doesn't seem justified or even valid, to me. Maybe I'm still overlooking something... I would also swear I've tried to reg a gmail address of johndoe@, been told it was already taken, but then allowed to reg john.doe@ implying that those two are completely separate and unique.

Hi
You have hit some good points brother,  Let me try to answer them:

1. Incase someone already has john you can always register john.doe (which is actually johndoe) but you cant registger j.ohn. (remember we are discussing gmail features) - ideally this is how it should be!

2. As for the smart spammers. I agree that this cant be fullproof. Thats y we mention "Gmail features help avoid spam"

3. as for those smart spammers combining the email id by removing the dots (like making johndoe out of j.o.h.n.doe) would still loose out to smart users. For example my personal email is is sunny.loveme@onlygizmos.com. and thats how all my friends have it. So incase those smart spammers take it as sunnyloveme@onlygizmos.com they will certainly mitt hit!

I really appreciate the time taken by you to respon ... hope to see you around...

Unfortunately not all sites are set up to enable you to register with plus addressing (I think I've told all the major php BBs that they are valid email addresses now).

Gmail is excellent at filtering out spam anyway. I don't know why you'd bother with all this. I've registered my gmail with a number of services and have never found an unwanted email in my inbox.

Well gmail sure is gr8 in filtering spam .. but this certainly shows to me why they are the best ... because they have thought of so many things already for us ...

many times while registering with sites and services we need to give them an email is ... i always give them a id with a common dot in place.. and a filter in gmail puts them in a label called "Formality" .. they are of use when i forget a password .. or something ... so its not always SPAM that we are fighting ...

one common problem with the name+tag@gmail.com method is that a lot of sites have non-compliant email address checking and will not accept a "+" in your email address

nice tips, though

I would like to share my tiny trick for sorting mails :). As I can use same email address across two domains (gmail.com and googlemail.com). I give my xyz@googlemail.com address to all friends and xyz@gmail.com to others... and by setting a simple filter and I get my personal and business mail sorted in different labels.
